Hexagram 31 joins Lake over Mountain. Mountain gives form and stillness; Lake brings openness and responsive exchange. Together they describe a meeting where a clear presence makes room for an equally real answer. Influence is not a contest of will; it appears wherever trust, attraction, example, or ideas move between people.

山上有泽，咸；君子以虚受人。

High on the mountain rests a lake: Influence. The wise person keeps the heart open and receives others without preconception.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, two yin lines form the base, three yang lines rise through the middle, and one yin line opens the top. The lower trigram Gen, the Mountain, is stillness that knows its own limits; the upper trigram Dui, the Lake, is openness and glad exchange. Influence: success. It is fruitful to stay true. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

A living response is present, so complete withdrawal may miss an opportunity. Yet the figure does not support treating chemistry, enthusiasm, or popularity as proof. Say no to tactics designed to provoke jealousy, rush agreement, or make silence mean whatever you want it to mean.
